One vowel changes the whole scene. Precisamos medir o comprimento da mesa sends you looking for a tape measure. O cumprimento entre os convidados foi caloroso puts two people at the door saying hello.
Both spellings are correct, so the spellchecker will not rescue you. The problem is meaning, not spelling. The useful move is to connect each form to an image or a substitute word.
We will start with comprimento vs cumprimento, then use the same method on eleven other pairs that make Portuguese learners — and plenty of native writers — pause.
Comprimento vs Cumprimento: The One-Vowel Trap
The answer fits on a tape measure and in a handshake:
| Portuguese | Meaning | Think of | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| comprimento | length | a measurement | Qual é o comprimento da ponte? — What is the length of the bridge? |
| cumprimento | greeting; fulfilment | cumprir, to fulfil | Ela me cumprimentou com um abraço. — She greeted me with a hug. |
Comprimento begins with the nasal sound in com: roughly kohm-pree-MEN-too. It is a dimension from one end to the other.
- O vestido tem o comprimento perfeito. — The dress is the perfect length.
- Medimos o comprimento da sala. — We measured the length of the room.
Cumprimento begins closer to koom-pree-MEN-too. It belongs to the family of cumprir (to fulfil) and cumprimentar (to greet).
- Mande meus cumprimentos à sua mãe. — Give my regards to your mother.
- O cumprimento do prazo é obrigatório. — Meeting the deadline is mandatory.
That second meaning matters. A cumprimento can be a hello or the act of carrying out a rule, promise, deadline or duty. That is why cumprimento dos protocolos means compliance with the protocols: the protocols are being followed, not measured.
The memory trick is simple: the U in cumprimento comes from cumprir. If nobody is greeting anyone or fulfilling anything, you probably want comprimento with O.
One English trap deserves a warning. A compliment is usually an elogio, not a comprimento. Meus cumprimentos can mean “my compliments” in a formal congratulatory sense, but Gostei da sua camisa is an elogio.
Try this in Falando: Move from reading to recall with Reviews. When a word catches you out, target it in Mistakes Practice. Keep the contrast visual: tape measure for O, handshake for U.

Five Pairs You Will Meet Every Day
Mau or mal? Replace it with good
Use mau when bom (good) would fit. Use mal when bem (well) would fit.
- Ele é um mau motorista. — He is a bad driver. → um bom motorista
- Ele dirige mal. — He drives badly. → dirige bem
- Estou me sentindo mal. — I feel ill.
- Ela acordou de mau humor. — She woke up in a bad mood.
The English translation sometimes hides the grammar, so run the Portuguese opposite test: mau ↔ bom; mal ↔ bem.
Mas or mais? But versus more
Mas means but. Mais means more, plus or most.
- Quero ir, mas estou cansado. — I want to go, but I am tired.
- Quero mais café. — I want more coffee.
If you can replace it with porém (however), choose mas. If there is addition, quantity or comparison, choose mais. In quick speech the two can sound surprisingly close.
Traz or trás? A verb needs no accent
Traz is a form of trazer, to bring: ele traz, ela traz, você traz. Trás points behind or backwards and normally travels with a preposition: atrás, para trás, por trás and de trás.
- Você traz o pão? — Are you bringing the bread?
- Olhe para trás. — Look behind you.
Try the infinitive. If trazer makes sense, write traz without the accent.
A or há? Put time on an arrow
For elapsed time in the past, use há. For future time or physical distance, use the preposition a.
- Cheguei há duas horas. — I arrived two hours ago.
- A aula começa daqui a duas horas. — The class starts in two hours.
- A padaria fica a 200 metros. — The bakery is 200 metres away.
Replace past há with faz: Cheguei faz duas horas. If that keeps the meaning, the H belongs there. Avoid há dois anos atrás; há already carries the “ago,” so use há dois anos or dois anos atrás.
Onde or aonde? Follow the preposition, not the feet
The school shortcut says stationary onde, movement aonde. It is useful, but the real rule is better: aonde = a + onde_. Use it when the verb asks for the preposition a.
- Onde você mora? — Where do you live?
- Aonde você vai? — Where are you going? (ir a)
- Para onde você viajou? — Where did you travel to? (viajar para)
That last sentence is why “movement equals aonde” eventually breaks. Let the verb choose the preposition.
Six More Pairs That Make Good Writers Pause
Conserto or concerto?
Conserto is a repair. Concerto is a musical concert, harmony or a formal agreement.
- O carro está no conserto. — The car is being repaired.
- Vamos ao concerto no Municipal. — We are going to the concert at the Municipal Theatre.
Picture the S in conserto as a winding road to the mechanic. Slightly ridiculous memory aids tend to survive.
Descrição or discrição?
Descrição tells what something is like. Discrição is tact, reserve or the quality of not attracting attention.
- A descrição do apartamento estava correta. — The apartment description was accurate.
- Ela resolveu o problema com discrição. — She handled the problem discreetly.
The related verbs expose the answer: descrever produces a descrição; ser discreto requires discrição.
Sessão, seção or cessão?
One trio has sneaked into our pairs list. Sessão is a period of activity, seção is a division, and cessão is a transfer or grant.
- A sessão do cinema começa às oito. — The film showing starts at eight.
- Procure na seção de frutas. — Look in the fruit section.
- A cessão dos direitos foi assinada. — The transfer of the rights was signed.
Cinema takes sessão; a supermarket takes seção; a contract may contain a cessão.
Eminente or iminente?
An eminente person is distinguished or prominent. An iminente event is about to happen, often with a whiff of trouble.
- Ela é uma eminente pesquisadora. — She is a distinguished researcher.
- A tempestade é iminente. — The storm is imminent.
English gives you imminent almost for free. Keep the I for something incoming.
Ratificar or retificar?
Ratificar confirms or validates. Retificar corrects or straightens.
- O conselho ratificou a decisão. — The council confirmed the decision.
- Preciso retificar meu endereço. — I need to correct my address.
This pair lives in forms, contracts and office emails. Before clicking send, ask: am I approving the old information or changing it?
Ter or haver? Brazil has two correct registers
On a São Paulo street, Tem muita gente aqui is the natural way to say “There are lots of people here.” Existential ter is deeply Brazilian and normal in conversation.
Formal writing prefers Há muita gente aqui or Existem muitas pessoas aqui. When haver means “to exist,” it is impersonal and stays singular:
- Havia três lugares livres. — There were three free seats.
- Houve vários problemas. — There were several problems.
- Pode haver mudanças. — There may be changes.
Not haviam três lugares or houveram problemas in standard writing. A Brazilian official-writing manual makes the register split explicit: existential ter is frequent in informal speech, while official prose uses haver or existir. So do not “correct” Brazilians for saying tem. Learn both doors and use the one that fits the room.
A Seven-Line Test
Choose the right option before looking at the answers.
- Qual é o comprimento / cumprimento da mesa?
- Ela canta muito mau / mal.
- Eu queria ficar, mas / mais já era tarde.
- O ônibus passou a / há dez minutos.
- Onde / Aonde você quer chegar?
- O técnico terminou o conserto / concerto.
- Segundo o relatório, ontem teve / houve duas reuniões.
Answers: comprimento, mal, mas, há, aonde, conserto, houve. In relaxed conversation, ontem teve duas reuniões is completely ordinary Brazilian Portuguese; segundo o relatório is your clue that the exercise wants the standard written option.
Try this in Falando: In Quick Practice, pay attention to confusing words inside complete sentences rather than memorising isolated labels. Ele dirige mal and ele é um mau motorista teach your brain more than a flashcard that says “mal = badly.” If you miss one, let it return in Reviews instead of rereading this table five times.
People Also Ask
Is it comprimento or cumprimento?
Use comprimento for physical length and cumprimento for a greeting or the fulfilment of a rule, duty or promise. O comprimento da ponte is the bridge's length; o cumprimento da lei is compliance with the law.
What does cumprimento mean in Brazilian Portuguese?
Cumprimento can mean a greeting, regards, or the act of fulfilling something. Meus cumprimentos means “my regards” or, formally, “my compliments.” Cumprimento do prazo means meeting the deadline.
How do I remember mau versus mal?
Use opposites. If bom fits, choose mau. If bem fits, choose mal: um mau dia / um bom dia; dormiu mal / dormiu bem.
Is tem instead of há wrong in Brazil?
Not in everyday speech. Existential ter, as in tem muita gente, is a normal feature of spoken Brazilian Portuguese. In formal standard writing, prefer há muita gente or existem muitas pessoas.
Give Each Word a Job
These pairs become manageable when you stop memorising spellings and assign each word a job. Comprimento measures. Cumprimento greets or fulfils. Mau stands opposite bom; mal stands opposite bem. Traz brings something; trás points behind you.
Choose three pairs that caught you today and write one miniature scene containing both sides. A representative example: O técnico trouxe o violino para o conserto antes do concerto. The technician brought the violin for repair before the concert. One sentence, three traps, no vocabulary list required.
Falando is built for this kind of contrast practice: real Brazilian examples, short repetitions and Reviews scheduled for when the distinction starts to fade. You can start learning Brazilian Portuguese free, add the pairs that matter to you and leave the other nine for another Tuesday.
