My first answer "organísmos" was rejected. So I tried the incorrect "organísmos." However my first answer was correct. I think it was being evaluated against the incorrect singular form "organismo."

"organismos" is the correct spelling - there's no accent on the i. A Portuguese word stressed on the second-to-last syllable only takes an accent when it ends in certain letters (-l, -r, -x, -i/-is, -us, -ã, -ão, among others); -os isn't one of them, so or-ga-NIS-mos is written plain. Compare turismo/turismos, mecanismo/mecanismos.
I checked the exercise data: the answer key is the plural "organismos", not the singular "organismo", so a correct plural would have been accepted.
