Ir pentear macaco

Portuguese

Meaning

To tell someone to get lost / Go fly a kite

Example

Já estou cansada de você me perturbar, vá pentear macaco!

I'm tired of you bothering me, go fly a kite!

Origin

Ir pentear macaco ("go comb a monkey") sends a bother off to a pointless, faintly ridiculous chore — grooming an animal that will never look the part. It belongs to an old Portuguese family of brush-offs built on the monkey, alongside ir bugiar, from bugio (an archaic word for ape).
