Regional vocabulary in Paraná

Paraná Portuguese belongs to several Southern speech areas rather than one uniform strip. The state includes a strong retroflex syllable-final r, northern transition zones connected with interior São Paulo, and central and western communities shaped by internal migration and German-, Italian-, Polish- and Ukrainian-language settlement.

Local vocabulary follows those routes. Curitiba maintains city-associated words such as vina and chineque, while ALiB food maps record other Paraná and Southern choices that overlap neighbouring states. The distribution is layered: a word can be emblematic in Curitiba and still be heard elsewhere in Paraná or the South.
