Origin

'Chorar as pitangas' (to cry the pitangas) is a Brazilian folk expression. 'Pitanga' is a small red Brazilian fruit that resembles a teardrop, and crying 'pitangas' of that deep red is a picturesque way of saying: to cry dramatically, or to whine.
