Dar pitaco

Portuguese

Meaning

To stick one's oar in / to give one's two cents uninvited

Example

Ela adora dar pitaco em assuntos que não são dela.

She loves sticking her oar in business that isn't hers.

Origin

The origin of pitaco is obscure. Two recurring guesses: (1) the Greek statesman Pittacus of Mytilene, traditionally cited for his sayings; (2) a Frenchism from petit coup ('small move/blow'), via card-game slang.
