Meaning
To hang up one's boots / To retire
Example
Depois de 40 anos na medicina, meu pai pendurou as chuteiras.
After 40 years in medicine, my father hung up his boots.
Origin
The expression is a direct borrow from football. In Portuguese-speaking football culture, 'pendurar as chuteiras' (to hang up the cleats) has been the standard phrase for a player retiring at least since the mid-20th century, echoing the locker-room image of hanging boots on a hook for the last time.
