Puxar saco

Portuguese

Meaning

To be a brown-noser / To suck up

Example

Leonardo vive puxando saco do chefe! Deve estar querendo uma promoção!

Leonardo is always sucking up to the boss! He must be trying to get a promotion!

Origin

The Brazilian origin most cited goes to Brazilian military slang of the 19th century: the subordinate who physically carried the officer's kit bag ('saco' = bag, sack) — flattering the boss in the most literal way. By the 20th century the phrase was a standard insult for obsequious behavior.
