Lavar as mãos

Portuguese

Meaning

To wash one's hands of it

Example

Cansei de aconselhar meu tio, lavei as mãos, vou viver minha vida!

I'm tired of advising my uncle, I washed my hands of it!

Origin

From Matthew 27:24: when the crowd demands Jesus be crucified, Pontius Pilate literally washes his hands in front of them, declaring himself innocent of the execution. The gesture becomes the universal symbol of refusing responsibility.
