Comprar gato por lebre

Portuguese

Meaning

To buy a pig in a poke / To be ripped off

Example

O anel era falso, coitada, comprou gato por lebre!

The ring was fake, poor thing, she got ripped off!

Origin

A classic Portuguese saying frequently attributed to Cervantes and the 17th-century Iberian rural fair tradition: unscrupulous sellers would pass off cat meat for the more expensive rabbit/hare. The dead animals looked similar once skinned.
