Onde Judas perdeu as botas

Portuguese

Meaning

In the middle of nowhere

Example

Katmandu?! É onde Judas perdeu as botas!

Kathmandu?! That's in the middle of nowhere!

Origin

The phrase is folkloric and ties back to Judas Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus. A popular legend says Judas hid the thirty pieces of silver in his boots; after he hanged himself his body was found barefoot, and people went searching for the lost boots and their treasure in some impossibly remote spot. The Bible never mentions boots — they are an invention of popular oral tradition, added to sharpen the sense of abandonment and distance.
