A2Lesson 6: Demonstratives, Possessives & Weather
Brazilian Portuguese uses three main structures for weather: estar + gerund for ongoing conditions (está chovendo), fazer for temperature/general weather (faz calor), and descriptive phrases with tempo/dia for overall conditions.
Estar + gerund: está chovendo, está nevando (ongoing)
Fazer + noun: faz calor/frio/sol (temperature/conditions)
Tempo/Dia + adj: tempo bom, dia lindo (descriptions)
Ter: tem sol, tem chuva (there is sun/rain)
Weather is always 3rd person singular
No subject pronouns with weather
Many weather expressions unique to Brazil
Regional weather vocabulary varies
Weather talk is the universal conversation starter in Brazil! From complaining about São Paulo's crazy weather ("Que tempo louco!") to planning beach trips ("Vai fazer sol?"), weather expressions are daily essentials. But Portuguese weather grammar is unique – you can't translate directly from English.
