While "se" is the Swiss Army knife of conditionals, these alternatives are like specialized surgical tools – each serves a specific purpose and adds sophistication to your Portuguese. Most importantly, nearly all trigger the subjunctive mood, which is why many learners avoid them. Don't be those learners!
Caso is "se" dressed in a business suit. It means "if" or "in case" but sounds more hypothetical and formal.
Structure: caso + present/imperfect subjunctive
| Se (informal/neutral) | Caso (formal/elegant) | English |
|---|---|---|
| Se você precisar | Caso você precise | If you need |
| Se ele vier | Caso ele venha | If he comes |
| Se nós pudermos | Caso nós possamos | If we can |
| Se ela quiser | Caso ela queira | If she wants |
