A1Lesson 3: Present Indicative & Modal Verbs
Poder (can/to be able), querer (to want), and precisar (to need) are the three most essential modal verbs in Portuguese, used constantly to express ability, desire, and necessity in everyday communication.
Poder: can, to be able to, may (permission/possibility)
Querer: to want, would like (desire/wishes)
Precisar: to need, must (necessity)
All three can be followed directly by infinitive
Only precisar requires "de" before nouns
Poder is irregular; querer and precisar are regular
Used to modify main verbs or express needs/wants
Essential for polite requests and basic communication
These three verbs transform basic statements into expressions of what you can do, want, or need – essential for navigating daily life! Without them, you can't ask "Posso entrar?" (Can I come in?), express desires like "Quero um café" (I want a coffee), or communicate needs like "Preciso de ajuda" (I need help). They're the building blocks of polite Portuguese and practical communication.

Direct: "Quero um café"
Polite: "Queria um café" (both mean "I want coffee")
