C1 (Advanced)Lesson 3: Precision Connectors & Transitions
Sophisticated connectors like contudo (however), outrossim (furthermore), and por conseguinte (therefore) elevate Brazilian Portuguese from everyday conversation to academic, professional, and literary excellence, serving as the linguistic equivalent of wearing a tailored suit to express contrasts, additions, and consequences with precision and elegance.
Contudo = however/nevertheless (introduces strong contrast)
Outrossim = furthermore/moreover (adds sophisticated emphasis)
Por conseguinte = therefore/consequently (shows logical consequence)
Position: Usually sentence-initial or after first clause
Always preceded by comma or period, followed by comma
Register: Formal to very formal (academic, legal, literary)
Todavia, porquanto, destarte are siblings in this family

Want to ace that CELPE-Bras exam, write a killer dissertation, or impress Brazilian colleagues in that boardroom presentation? These sophisticated connectors are your secret weapons for sounding educated, professional, and eloquent in Brazilian Portuguese. While "mas," "também," and "então" work fine in everyday chat, dropping a well-placed "contudo" or "por conseguinte" in formal contexts instantly signals that you've mastered the language at its highest levels. These connectors appear constantly in Brazilian newspapers, academic texts, legal documents, and business communications – knowing them transforms you from tourist to scholar!
Brazilian Portuguese has a clear hierarchy of formality in connectors:
| Casual | Standard | Formal | Ultra-Formal |
|---|---|---|---|
| mas | porém | contudo | todavia |
| e também | além disso | outrossim | ademais |
| então | portanto | por conseguinte | destarte |
| porque | pois | porquanto | posto que |
Contudo expresses contrast or opposition with more weight than "mas" or "porém."
"A hipótese inicial foi refutada. Contudo, os dados revelaram padrões inesperados." (The initial hypothesis was refuted. However, the data revealed unexpected patterns.)
"O estudo confirmou a teoria principal. Outrossim, identificou três variáveis não previstas." (The study confirmed the main theory. Furthermore, it identified three unforeseen variables.)
"As amostras foram contaminadas. Por conseguinte, o experimento foi repetido." (The samples were contaminated. Consequently, the experiment was repeated.)
"O trimestre superou expectativas. Contudo, o cenário global permanece volátil." (The quarter beat expectations. However, the global picture remains volatile.)
"A fusão foi aprovada pelos acionistas. Outrossim, recebeu aval do CADE." (The merger was approved by shareholders. Furthermore, it received clearance from the competition authority.)
"Os custos operacionais aumentaram 20%. Por conseguinte, ajustes tarifários são necessários." (Operating costs rose 20%. Consequently, price adjustments are necessary.)
"O réu alegou legítima defesa. Contudo, as provas indicam premeditação." (The defendant pleaded self-defence. However, the evidence points to premeditation.)
Outrossim is dying in spoken Portuguese – even highly educated Brazilians rarely say it aloud. It survives mainly in:
Legal petitions
Academic dissertations
Governmental documents
People trying to sound excessively formal (often mockingly)
Common error: Starting paragraphs with connectors without proper antecedent:
❌ First paragraph: "Contudo, o Brasil é grande." (However what?)
✅ Second paragraph: "Brazil has challenges. Contudo, it remains strong."
