The driver made a rude bent-arm gesture at the traffic officer and sped away.
In Portugal this rude gesture is known as manguito: a bent arm with a closed fist, often with the other hand at the elbow. Popular accounts associate it with "depicting the coat of arms of Saint Anthony" and interpret it as a phallic insult. Folklorist Luís da Câmara Cascudo is quoted as interpreting it as the male organ directed at the insulted person. These accounts do not establish the gesture’s birthplace.
