How people talk in the Northeast

wow!, oh my!, dang!

The signature paraense interjection — O Liberal calls it 'a vírgula do paraense' — carrying surprise, delight, anger or relief depending purely on intonation. Note the same noun is a coarse insult for a woman elsewhere in Brazil, so use it only as the northern exclamation.

Égua, olha essa chuva!Wow, look at this rain!

what?, huh?, wow!

The clipped form of 'oxente', fired off at the start of a reply to signal surprise, disbelief or mild indignation. It is the single most recognisable Northeastern marker in speech and instantly regional-sounding elsewhere.

Oxe, de onde você tirou essa ideia maluca?What? Where did you get that crazy idea?

oh my, wow

The emblematic Northeastern exclamation of surprise or puzzlement, shortened to 'oxe'; Priberam derives it from 'ó gente'. Friendly and everyday, but it instantly marks the speaker as nordestino.

Oxente, mas que coisa boa esse cuscuz!Oh my, this cuscuz is so good!

you see?, you got it?, right?

Tacked onto the end of a sentence to check the other person is with you — 'tranca a porta, visse?'. It is the single most recognisable marker of Recife speech and instantly places you as pernambucano.

Não esqueça de trancar a porta, visse?Don't forget to lock the door, got it?

wow, oh my, omg

All-purpose exclamation of surprise, dismay or mild disgust; it is a clipped euphemism for 'Virgem Maria', so it stays inoffensive. Both dictionaries mark it Northeastern and popular in register.

Vixe, tu viu quanto custa isso?Wow, did you see how much that costs?

oh my god, jesus, holy moly

Expanded form of 'vixe' (itself from 'Virgem Maria'), used for shock, dismay or exasperation — Aulete prints 'Vixe Maria!' as its own example. Both dictionaries mark it Northeastern.

Vixe maria, viu o preço da carne?Oh my god, did you see the price of meat?

dude, country fellow, guy

A colloquial reduction of 'caboclo' used as a friendly word for a guy or country fellow, roughly 'dude'. Rural/interior flavour; can sound belittling if used about someone, so keep it to friendly contexts.

Aquele caboco é gente boa.That dude is good people.

snitch, rat, informer

An informer or snitch, typically someone who talks to the police. It is an accusation, so it lands hard — 'ele é caguete' is a serious thing to say.

Não conta nada pra ele, é caguete.Don't tell him anything, he's a snitch.

liar, fibber

Someone who spins tall tales — a fibber rather than a malicious liar, from 'lorota' (a whopper). Informal but not offensive, and used across Brazil.

Não acredita nele, é loroteiro.Don't believe him, he's a fibber.

mom, mommy

Affectionate 'mum' in the Northeast (strongest in Bahia), formed from mãe + the diminutive -inha; its male counterpart is painho. Used as a term of address inside the family.

Mainha sempre faz comida pra gente no domingo.My mom always cooks for us on Sundays.

my king (friendly term of address)

Bahian term of address, warm and unmarked: shopkeepers, friends and strangers alike get 'meu rei'. It is friendliness, not flattery or flirting.

E aí, meu rei, como tá?How are you, my king?

partner, friend

Friendly term for a mate or sidekick, built on 'par' (pair/partner); used as a vocative among friends in Recife and more widely in the Northeast.

Esse cara é meu parêia.This guy is my friend.

derogatory slang for a sex worker or promiscuous woman

A heavy insult for a woman (Priberam marks it calão/tabuísmo, Aulete N.E. Vulg.) — recognition only, never for production. The same word innocently names a half-coconut-shell bowl and, in Bahia, a chicken-and-okra stew.

Não usa a palavra quenga, é ofensiva.Don't use the slur quenga, it's offensive.

loose woman (means just "girl" in Portugal)

A false friend with real consequences: in Portugal 'rapariga' is simply 'girl', but in the Northeast, Minas Gerais and Goiás it means a prostitute or a kept woman and is a serious insult. Learners should avoid it in Brazil and say 'moça' or 'menina'.

ugly person

Depreciative word for someone shabby or ugly — Priberam splits it as 'badly dressed' in Bahia and 'ugly' in Minas Gerais. Offensive if aimed at a person.

O cachorro dele é um tribufu, mas é simpático.His dog is ugly, but friendly.

tall, lanky person

Teasing nickname for a very tall, skinny person, from the literal sense of a long pole. It is banter among friends but can read as mocking someone's body, so use with care.

Aquele varapau joga basquete.That tall guy plays basketball.

deadbeat, person who doesn't pay debts

Recife slang for someone who runs up debts and never pays — a deadbeat. Clearly insulting, so it is used about people, rarely to their face.

Ele é o maior xexêro do bairro.He is the biggest deadbeat in the neighborhood.

bow-legged

Describes someone whose legs or feet turn out of true when they walk; it is a plain physical description in country speech but can be used mockingly, so avoid it about people present.

Ele anda zambeta de tanto montar a cavalo.He walks bow-legged from horse riding.

dumb, silly, dazed

Everyday insult for someone acting slow-witted, gormless or dazed; both dictionaries record it without a regional label, but Recife/Pernambuco slang lists include it, so it reads as Northeastern flavour rather than exclusively Ceará.

Ele ficou ali abestalhado.He stayed there looking dazed.

cocky, cheeky, ballsy

Said of someone forward, cheeky or pushy who oversteps the mark; in the North and Northeast it is the everyday word for a bold, provocative person. Mildly critical, often said half-jokingly, and about behaviour rather than about looks.

Esse cara é abusado, chegou sem ser convidado.That guy is so cocky, he showed up without being invited.

bothered, annoyed

Means bothered, vexed or eaten up with worry. Both dictionaries treat it as general — and rather old-fashioned — Portuguese, though learners will meet it mostly in Northeastern and rural speech.

Tô amofinado com essa situação toda.I'm bothered with this whole situation.

tormented, harassed

Extremely common in the Northeast for feeling stressed, hassled or worn down by problems — 'tô aperreado' is the everyday complaint about too much work or worry. It is neutral in tone and used freely with anyone.

Tô aperreado com tanto trabalho.I'm so tormented with so much work to do.

awesome, amazing, angry

The all-purpose Northeastern intensifier of approval — a show, a meal or a person can be arretado. Beware the two other senses Priberam records: 'arretado' also means furious, and in informal Brazilian usage it can mean sexually aroused, so intonation and context matter.

O show de ontem foi arretado!The show last night was awesome!

rushed, in a hurry, hassled

In the Northeast avexado means rushed or impatient (Aulete labels this sense N.E.); elsewhere in Portuguese the same word means embarrassed. 'Deixa de ser avexado' = stop being in such a hurry.

Por que tu tá tão avexado?Why are you in such a hurry?

confused, disoriented

Describes someone dazed, scatterbrained or knocked off balance — the sense of 'azoretado'. Aulete marks it simply Brazilian; learners will hear it mostly in the Northeastern interior.

Depois da viagem fiquei azuretado.After the trip I was completely disoriented.

risky, dicey

'Tá barril' says a situation is heavy, dicey or about to go wrong. Watch out: in Bahia the same word is also used approvingly for something very good, so the tone depends entirely on context and delivery.

Aquele lugar tá barril, melhor não ir.That place is dicey, better not go.

huge, gigantic

Said of a person, animal or thing that is strikingly big, usually with admiring surprise. Aulete marks it for both the Centre-West and the Northeast; in the Centre-West it has a second, unrelated mining sense, 'small diamond'.

Esse cachorro é bitelo!That dog is huge!

down, gloomy, sad

Said of someone listless, low-spirited or dragging — 'tá borocoxô' is what you ask a friend who looks deflated. The word is playful and never offensive.

Por que tu tá tão borocoxô hoje?Why are you so down today?

flashy (color)

A Recife word for a loud, garish colour or outfit — the Pernambuco lists gloss it as 'de cores berrantes, de gosto duvidoso', so it is mildly mocking, not a compliment.

Você não acha essa camisa meio cheguei?Don't you think this shirt is a bit flashy?

odd, weird, extravagant

Describes something odd, gaudy or over the top — clothes, ideas, contraptions — with a hint of ridicule. Informal but not offensive.

O Romão tem um jeito de vestir bem estrambólico.Romão has a really odd way of dressing.

coward

A taunt aimed at someone who backs out — 'deixa de ser frouxo'. The base sense is 'slack/loose', so the insult builds on the idea of having no backbone; it stings but is not obscene.

Deixa de ser frouxo e pula!Stop being a coward and jump!

skinny, sickly

Said of someone (or an animal) who is skinny and sickly-looking, weakened rather than merely slim. Aulete labels the sense Bras. N.E.; possibly of Bantu origin per Priberam.

Esse gato tá guenzo, dá comida pra ele.That cat is skinny, give it some food.

pissed off, fuming, livid

Beyond the literal 'insulted', injuriado is used for plain furious/annoyed — Aulete's third sense is 'irritado, aborrecido'. Everyday speech, not rude in itself.

Ele ficou injuriado com a multa.He got pissed off about the parking ticket.

silly, dumb

A Northeastern way of calling someone dopey or dim — 'deixa de ser leso' is a scolding between friends or from a parent. Mildly insulting, so keep it to people you know.

Deixa de ser leso e presta atenção!Stop being silly and pay attention!

broke, out of cash

Broke, with nothing in your pocket — 'tô liso' is the standard way to say it. Aulete marks it Bras. Gír. and prints an N.E. Pop. note for the same sense.

Tô liso até o dia do pagamento.I'm broke until payday.

gloomy, sullen

Describes someone gloomy and withdrawn — sulking rather than sad-crying. Aulete's antonym is 'alegre'. It inflects: macambúzio / macambúzia.

Ele tá macambúzio o dia inteiro.He's been sullen all day.

cool, awesome

The Northeastern all-purpose 'cool/great', applied to ideas, films, people and nights out alike. It is invariable — 'muito massa', never 'masso' — and has spread well beyond the Northeast, but still sounds nordestino.

Sua ideia para o projeto foi muito massa.Your idea for the project was really cool.

discouraged, listless

Flat, listless, with no energy — of a person, a team or a whole day. Everyday Northeastern speech; Aulete's 'Pop.' sense is 'cansado, exausto, adormecido'.

Depois da derrota, o time ficou morgado.After the loss, the team was listless.

bad quality, cheap

Used of things that are cheap and badly made — 'uma camisa peba'. Dismissive but not obscene; applied to a person it is a put-down.

Comprei uma camisa muito peba na feira.I bought a very cheap quality shirt at the market.

stingy

In Recife and across much of the Northeast this labels a tightwad who has money but will not spend it; dictionaries also record a related sense of someone who sponges off other people's goodwill. It is clearly critical — do not say it to someone's face lightly.

Ele é tão pirangueiro que não quis pagar a conta.He is so stingy that he didn't want to pay the bill.

silly, idiot

Northeastern insult for someone dim or slow on the uptake; both dictionaries label it Nordeste. It is a real put-down, so it belongs between friends joking or in an actual argument.

Cala a boca, seu tabacudo!Shut up, you idiot!

beer

Bar slang for a beer, used among friends rather than when ordering formally. Priberam records it as a Brazilian regionalism; note the homonym bia also means a cigarette butt, so context disambiguates.

Bora tomar uma bia no bar.Let's go grab a cold one at the bar.

French bread

In Rio Grande do Sul this is simply what you ask for at the bakery — the small crusty roll called pão francês elsewhere in Brazil. It is a normal, non-slang word there, but will puzzle listeners in other states.

Vou comprar dois cacetinhos na padaria.I'll buy two French breads at the bakery.

lightly salted sun-dried beef

Beef lightly salted and air/sun-dried so it keeps without refrigeration — a staple of Northeastern cooking, typically served with macaxeira, farofa or manteiga de garrafa. Aulete gives 'carne de vento' and 'carne de sertão' as synonyms.

Carne de sol com macaxeira é clássico.Sun-dried beef with cassava is a classic.

pumpkin

The everyday Northern and Northeastern word for pumpkin/squash, where the rest of Brazil says abóbora; from Tupi. Neutral in the region, but Aulete notes it is also used pejoratively in the South as a nickname for Northeasterners, so avoid it about people.

Fiz uma sopa de jerimum pro jantar.I made pumpkin soup for dinner.

cassava

The everyday word for sweet cassava across the Northeast and the North — in Recife or Salvador this, not mandioca, is what you order. Priberam marks it a Brazilian regionalism without naming the region.

No Nordeste, muita gente fala macaxeira.In the Northeast, many people say macaxeira.

headband

Standard Portuguese for a diadem/tiara; what is regional is that in Recife it is the ordinary everyday word for the plastic hairband most Brazilians call a 'tiara'.

Ela comprou um diadema novo.She bought a new headband.

hair tie

Northeastern word for a hair elastic (elsewhere 'elástico de cabelo' or 'xuxinha'); Priberam also records it for the bunched-up knot of hair itself. Completely everyday.

Me empresta um pitó para prender o cabelo?Can you lend me a hair tie to put my hair up?

button

In the Northeast, the button or switch you press on an appliance — 'aperta o pitoco'. The wider sense is any short stubby thing, including a docked tail, so context decides.

Aperta aquele pitoco ali.Press that button over there.

traffic light

One of the classic regional names for a traffic light, alongside semáforo (standard), sinal (Rio) and farol (São Paulo). It is ordinary everyday vocabulary, not slang, wherever it is used.

Para na sinaleira.Stop at the traffic light.

to mock, to make fun of

To mock or take the mickey out of someone, usually with 'de' ('mangar de alguém'); Northeastern lists treat it as a staple, and it is teasing rather than aggressive.

Pára de mangar do seu irmão!Stop making fun of your brother!

to keep an eye on, to watch over

Aulete labels the Northeastern sense (Bras., Nordeste): 'espreitar, vigiar' — to watch, keep an eye on, or lie in wait for someone. Outside the Northeast the verb just means to pasture livestock.

Pastora os meninos enquanto eu cozinho.Watch the kids while I cook.

to burst, to pop

To burst or pop with a noise — a balloon, a tyre, popcorn. It also means to hit something hard. Colloquial but not rude.

O balão pocou na mão do menino.The balloon popped in the kid's hand.

to barely touch

To graze or barely touch something in passing — commonly used as a warning, 'don't you dare lay a finger on it'. Aulete records it in a football context; Priberam knows only an unrelated sense, 'to quarrel'.

Não trisca na minha moto.Don't even touch my motorcycle.

remote, hard-to-reach place

Literally dense scrub or virgin bush; in everyday speech 'morar numa brenha' means living way out in the middle of nowhere. Slightly disparaging about the place, not about the person.

Ele mora numa brenha.He lives in a really remote place.

mess, chaos, wild scene

In the Northeast it names a lively, messy scene — a rowdy party or general chaos — and can be affectionate ('what a blast') or dismissive ('what a shambles') depending on tone. It also carries a separate, harsher sense of 'trashy stuff / the dregs'.

A festa virou uma bagaceira total.The party turned into total chaos.

river wave

In the Amazon this is the everyday word for the swell or choppy waves that rock a boat on the river; Aulete carries N., N.E. and Amaz. labels. Note it also describes water that is merely stirring gently, and Priberam records a separate sense 'strong wind'.

O barco balançou muito porque pegou um banzeiro forte.The boat rocked a lot because it hit a strong wave.

thin leg

A jokey word for a skinny leg — Aulete marks it 'Joc.' (jocular), so it teases rather than insults. Usually plural: 'que cambito!'.

O Marcelo tem cambito mas corre ligeiro.Marcelo has thin legs but runs fast.

commotion, ruckus

Covers both halves of a loud crowd: a lively party with music and dancing, and a noisy row. Context decides which — 'teve um fuzuê danado' can be a great night or a brawl.

Teve um fuzuê danado na festa ontem.There was a huge commotion at the party last night.

big rat

The regional name for a big rat, and by extension a chancer or petty crook — calling a person 'gabiru' is an insult. Northeastern glossaries and Recife lists both carry it.

No Recife, é comum chamar a ratazana de gabiru.In Recife, it's common to call a big rat gabiru.

cuckold's horn (for being cheated on)

The Northeastern equivalent of 'chifre' — the horn of being cheated on; 'aguentar gaia' is to put up with an unfaithful partner. Mocking and face-losing, so it stings.

Ele disse que não vai aguentar gaia.He says he won't put up with the cuckold's horn.

cringe feeling, physical/emotional discomfort, unease

Northeastern word for a full-body cringe or unease — the shiver from nails on a blackboard, or a queasy burning in the stomach. Usually said as 'dá/me dá uma gastura'.

Aquele barulho de unha no quadro me dá uma gastura.That sound of nails on the chalkboard gives me such discomfort.

tall tale, broken record, drone

From the Catholic litany: a long, droning, repetitive speech you have heard too many times. 'Não ouço a ladainha dele' = I tune out his usual spiel.

Não ouço a ladainha dele não.I don't listen to his nonsense.

clowning around, silly faces

Pulling silly faces or generally clowning around — 'para de fazer munganga' is what an adult says to a kid mugging for the camera. Light and teasing in tone.

Pare de fazer munganga na foto!Stop clowning around in the photo!

mosquito

The ordinary Northeastern word for a mosquito, where São Paulo says pernilongo and Rio says muriçoca or carapanã. Fully neutral, used by everyone; from Tupi.

Em Salvador, o mosquito é chamado de muriçoca.In Salvador, the mosquito is called muriçoca.

loud bang, blast

A bang or blast — a firework, a burst tyre, an explosion. Aulete also records a figurative use meaning 'first-rate, spectacular' ('uma festa de papoco'), so context matters.

Deu um papoco na cozinha.There was a huge bang in the kitchen.

seaweed

Seaweed — specifically the brown Sargassum that washes up on the beach. Standard vocabulary, not slang, though Recife word lists include it because it is such an everyday beach word there.

A praia está cheia de sargaço hoje.The beach is full of seaweed today.
