A2Lesson 5: Object Pronouns & Basic Placement
Proclisis (placing pronouns before the verb) is the dominant pattern in Brazilian Portuguese, occurring in most simple sentences contrary to traditional grammar rules, making Brazilian Portuguese distinct from European Portuguese.
Proclisis = pronoun before verb: me ajuda, te amo
Enclisis = pronoun after verb: ajuda-me (formal)
Brazil strongly prefers proclisis
Negative words require proclisis: não me ajuda
Questions trigger proclisis: quando te vejo?
Subordinate clauses: que me disse
Starting sentences with pronouns = normal in Brazil
Informal speech = almost 100% proclisis
Pronoun placement instantly reveals whether you learned Brazilian or European Portuguese! Saying "Amo-te" instead of "Te amo" marks you as foreign or extremely formal. Brazilian Portuguese revolutionized pronoun placement – what grammar books call "wrong" is actually how 200 million Brazilians speak daily. Master proclisis and you'll sound natural in everything from casual "Me liga!" to understanding why Brazilians never say "Diga-me" but always "Me diga."

Me ajuda (Help me)
Te amo (I love you)
Nos vemos (See you)
Se levanta (Gets up)
Ajuda-me (Help me)
Amo-te (I love you)
Vemo-nos (See each other)
"Me passa o sal?" (Pass me the salt?)
"Te vejo amanhã!" (See you tomorrow!)
"Ela me contou tudo" (She told me everything)
"Nos encontramos às 8" (We meet at 8)
"Como se chama?" (What's your name?)
"Quando me liga?" (When will you call me?)
"Não te preocupa!" (Don't worry!)
"Por que me ignoras?" (Why do you ignore me?)
"Nunca me esquecerei de você" (I'll never forget you)
Affirmative imperative traditionally takes enclisis:
Traditional: "Ajuda-me!"
Brazilian: "Me ajuda!"
Both heard, second dominates
With infinitives, both positions work:
Sem me avisar = Sem avisar-me
Para te ajudar = Para ajudar-te
First option more common
