Trocar ideia

Portuguese

Meaning

To shoot the breeze / to have a chat

Example

Bora trocar ideia tomando um café depois do trabalho?

Wanna shoot the breeze over a coffee after work?

Origin

Trocar ideia is built from transparent parts: trocar ("to exchange, swap") and ideia ("idea, thought"). To "swap ideas" with someone is simply to talk things over, sharing thoughts back and forth — much like the English "to exchange ideas," only used in a relaxed, everyday register.
