B1Lesson 5: The "SE" Constructions
Distinguishing between reflexive and impersonal uses of "se" in different contexts.
Reflexive: subject + se + verb (agrees with subject) OR Impersonal: se + verb (special agreement rules)
Reflexive: ele se lava (he washes himself)
Impersonal: lava-se carros (cars are washed)
Same verb, different meanings with se
Reflexive = specific subject acts on self
Impersonal = agentless/passive action
Agreement differs completely
Position rules vary
Context usually clarifies
Confusing reflexive and impersonal "se" can completely change your message! "Ele se vende" means "He sells himself" (prostitution?), while "Vende-se" means "For sale" (normal commerce). This distinction affects everything from reading signs to understanding conversations. Brazilian Portuguese uses both extensively – reflexive for daily routines and emotions, impersonal for formal announcements and general statements. Master the difference to avoid embarrassing misunderstandings and navigate both personal and public communication.

zangar-se
Northeast drops more reflexives:
"Sinto bem" vs. "Sinto-me bem"
Still not impersonal, just simplified
