A2 (Elementary)Lesson 8: Noun Phrase Expansion
Tudo never changes and does not quantify a following noun in these basic noun phrases — it is "everything" all by itself: Comi tudo. (I ate everything.) Todo / toda / todos / todas agrees with a noun, expressed or understood: todo dia (every day), todas as casas (all the houses). This point separates the two, then shows how one little article turns todo dia (every day) into todo o dia (the whole day).
tudo never changes and does not quantify a following noun in these models: Comi tudo. (I ate everything.) · Isso é tudo. (That’s all.) Forms of todo can also stand alone with an understood noun.
todo / toda / todos / todas agrees with the noun beside it: todo dia (every day), todas as casas (all the houses).
In these Brazilian time models, the article normally changes the meaning: todo dia (every day) vs todo o dia (the whole day); toda semana (every week) vs toda a semana (the entire week).
In these plural noun phrases the article normally stays: todos os dias (every day), todas as noites (every night).
For "the whole X", Brazilians usually put the noun first: o dia todo (all day), o tempo todo (all the time).
The greetings all run on tudo: Tudo bem? / Tudo bom? / Tudo joia? (How's it going?)
todo mundo means everybody and takes a singular verb: Todo mundo gosta. (Everybody likes it.)
tudo (invariable, stands alone) = everything · todo/toda/todos/todas + noun (agrees) = every, all · todo dia = every day vs todo o dia = the whole day

These two words show up in your first Brazilian hello and never stop: Tudo bem? is the standard greeting and todo dia is how you describe your routine. English speakers can confuse them because English uses overlapping words such as all, every and everything, with different grammatical jobs. Saying tudo os dias, or answering Todo bem, marks you as a beginner in one syllable. The article difference is not cosmetic either: tell your boss you worked todo dia when you meant o dia todo and you have promised something quite different.
English all, every and everything have overlapping meanings but different grammatical jobs. For the basic noun phrases here, a useful first check is: does a noun come right after it?
For everything, viewed as a whole → tudo. It is a pronoun. The thing it refers to is already inside it.
A noun → todo, and it dresses to match: todo, toda, todos, todas (every, all).

Saying tudo os dias. ❌ → ✅ todos os dias (every day). The moment a noun follows, the word has to agree, so it can never be tudo.
Answering Todo bem. ❌ → ✅ Tudo bem. (I'm fine.) There is no noun in the greeting, so it is tudo — and this one is heard immediately.
Putting tudo in front of a noun. ❌ tudo o dinheiro → ✅ todo o dinheiro (all the money). ❌ tudo a comida → ✅ toda a comida (all the food).
Saying tudo mundo. ❌ → ✅ todo mundo (everybody), and keep the verb singular: Todo mundo sabe. (Everybody knows.) ❌ Todo mundo sabem.
Assuming todo o mundo can only mean “the whole world”. It can also mean everybody, depending on context. ✅ Todo mundo viu o vídeo. (Everybody saw the video.) is a common Brazilian form without the article; O vídeo rodou o mundo todo. (The video went around the whole world.) refers to the world in this context.
Forgetting agreement in the plural. ❌ todos as casas → ✅ todas as casas (all the houses). Todo matches the noun in gender and number, exactly like any other adjective.
Inventing tudos. Tudo has no plural: ❌ tudos → ✅ tudo (everything) or ✅ todos (all of them).
