A2 (Elementary)Lesson 13: Spoken Brazilian
How Brazilians actually write to each other: common abbreviations (vc, tb, pq, blz, vlw, flw), how the repeated-k spelling kkkkk expresses laughter, how to handle voice messages, and the line you must not cross — chat abbreviations do not belong in a formal email to a professor.
Vowels go first: vc (você — you), tb / tbm (também — too), pq (porque / por que / por quê / porquê — because / why / reason), td (tudo — everything), hj (hoje — today).
Sign-offs are their own set: blz (beleza — cool), vlw (valeu — thanks), flw (falou — bye), bjs (beijos — kisses), abs (abraços — hugs).
Repeated k expresses laughter: kkkkk is useful to recognise. Other spellings, including hahaha, appear too. More letters can add emphasis; rs (risos — laughter) is another option.
Áudios are common. A sender may prefer to record a message. Manda por escrito? (Could you send that in writing?) is useful; explaining why you cannot listen helps.
Final punctuation depends on context. Short messages often omit the period, but a final full stop or lone . does not always mean annoyance.
The register line: abbreviations suit informal chats. In formal emails and applications, use full forms — obrigado (thank you), rather than obg.
vc = você · tb/tbm = também · pq = porque / por que / por quê / porquê · blz = beleza · vlw = valeu · flw = falou · kkkkk = laughing — informal chats, including friends and family; avoid these abbreviations in formal writing

A Brazilian friend may write in their usual chat style without realising that you need help reading it. So the first blz, flw (cool, bye) you receive is a wall: your grammar is fine and you still cannot read four letters. That can affect both comprehension and closeness — group chats, party plans and family threads all live here, and you are outside them. The other half is what you send. Typing full, punctuated sentences to a friend is not "more correct" in this setting; it can read as stiff or annoyed to some contacts, while others find it ordinary, which is a message you never meant to send.
One common trick is this: keep the consonants that identify a word, drop everything the reader can put back. você becomes vc, também becomes tb, tudo becomes td, muito becomes mt. Accents are often omitted and capital letters may be omitted too, and não shrinks to n or ñ.
Once you see the rule, abbreviations you have never met are still readable: qnd is quando (when), tds is todos (everyone), ngm is ninguém (nobody), vdd is verdade (true).
Some live in both worlds. Tá (está), tô (estou) and cê (você) are real spoken reductions that people also type — how they sound is the first point of this lesson; here they are simply a few more things you have to be able to read.
Everyday words:
| Portuguese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| vc chega q horas? | Você chega que horas? — What time are you getting here? |
| tbm quero ir!! | Também quero ir!! — I want to go too!! |
| pq vc n me chamou? | Por que você não me chamou? — Why didn't you invite me? |
| td bem cmg, e vc? | Tudo bem comigo, e você? — I'm doing fine, and you? |
| tem festa no fds? | Tem festa no fim de semana? — Is there a party this weekend? |
| mds kkkkk n acredito | Meu Deus, não acredito — OMG, I can't believe it (laughing) |
| sdds de vcs | Saudades de vocês — I miss you all |
| obg pelo convite! | Obrigada pelo convite! — Thanks for the invitation! |
| vou mandar um áudio, pf escuta dps | Vou mandar um áudio, por favor escuta depois — I'm going to send a voice message, please listen later |
| blz, te vejo amn | Beleza, te vejo amanhã — Cool, see you tomorrow |
Treating laughter spelling as a nationality test. Hahaha and lol can appear too. Learn kkkkk que engraçado (that’s so funny) as a common chat pattern, rather than treating hahaha que engraçado as an error.
Using chat abbreviations in a formal email. Obg pela msg or a cheerful flw can sound too casual in this setting. ✅ Obrigado pela mensagem, professor. (Thank you for the message, professor.)
Reading a lone n as a typo. N and ñ are não (no, not), not noise on the line: n vou hj is Não vou hoje. (I'm not going today.) The same goes for q — it is que (that, what).
Reading pq as only "because". Context gives the meaning: pq vc n foi? (Por que você não foi? — Why didn’t you go?) against n fui pq estou doente (Não fui porque estou doente. — I didn’t go because I’m sick.) In full writing, por que asks why, por quê is used at the end or before a pause, and porquê is the noun meaning reason.
Assuming bjs must be flirting. Bjs (beijos — kisses) can be an ordinary warm sign-off among friends, relatives and colleagues. Its meaning depends on the relationship; it is not automatically a proposal.
Leaving an áudio unplayed. A voice message is the conversation, not an attachment to it. If you cannot listen now, say so: Depois eu escuto, estou no trabalho! (I'll listen later, I'm at work!)
