A2 (Elementary)Lesson 6: Demonstratives, Possessives & Weather
Portuguese uses nouns in common expressions for hunger, cold and fear: Tenho fome, Estou com frio, Estou com medo. Ter can describe a present state or a general condition; estar com commonly places it in the current situation, and ficar com describes entering it. Learn the nouns, their gender and the agreement of muito/muita.
In these common state expressions, Portuguese uses nouns with ter or estar com. It also has state adjectives.
ter + noun can describe a present or general state: Ela tem medo de avião. (She’s afraid of flying.)
estar com + noun commonly describes the current state: Estou com fome. Tenho fome can also mean being hungry now.
ficar com + noun = getting into the state: Fiquei com fome depois do treino. (I got hungry after training.)
The word for "a lot" agrees with the noun: muita fome, muito frio.
estar com + a thing means you have it on you: Está com você? (Do you have it?)
To clearly describe feeling hot or cold, say Estou com calor or Estou com frio. Estou quente and Estou frio can describe physical temperature or have figurative meanings, depending on context.
ter + noun (present or general state) · estar com + noun (current state) · ficar com + noun (entering the state) — fome, sede, sono, frio, calor, medo, pressa…

These are sentences you need in everyday life: you are hungry, cold, rushed or in pain. Learning the noun construction avoids expressions such as Eu sou fome for “I’m hungry”. It also gives you clear ways to describe felt heat and cold: Estou com calor, Estou com frio.
Mastering the pattern opens up a whole family at once — fear, luck, jealousy, embarrassment, fever and missing someone. Choose ter or estar com according to the construction and context; they do not create an absolute habitual-versus-now divide.
English says I am hungry, with an adjective. This Portuguese pattern instead uses a noun: a fome (hunger), with ter or estar com. The same pattern works with o frio (cold), o medo (fear), a pressa (hurry) and a dor (pain). Portuguese also has state adjectives, such as faminto (hungry); this lesson focuses on the noun constructions.
Because these words are nouns, in these state expressions:
they combine with ter (“to have”) or estar com (“to be with”); Eu sou fome and Estou fome are not the ordinary way to say “I’m hungry”;
they have a gender, so the word for “a lot” has to agree with them: muita fome, muito frio;
they can be sized and described like any other noun: uma fome danada (a monstrous hunger).
So the two sentences you actually need are:
| Portuguese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Estou com sono, vou dormir cedo hoje. | I'm sleepy — I'm going to bed early today. |
| Que sede! Você tem água aí? | So thirsty! Do you have water there? |
| Ele está com febre desde ontem. | He's had a fever since yesterday. |
| Tenho muita sorte de morar aqui. | I'm very lucky to live here. |
| Você tem razão, a culpa foi minha. | You're right, it was my fault. |
| Fiquei com raiva e não respondi nada. | I got angry and didn't answer at all. |
| Ela está com ciúmes do irmão mais novo. | She's jealous of her younger brother. |
| Estou com saudade da minha avó. | I miss my grandmother. |
| Quem está com as chaves do carro? | Who's got the car keys? |
| Depois da corrida, fiquei com uma fome absurda. | After the run I got ridiculously hungry. |
Using Eu sou fome for “I’m hungry”. Fome is a noun; the usual expressions are ✅ Estou com fome. / Tenho fome. Portuguese also allows adjectives such as faminto; this is a lesson about common noun constructions.
Dropping the com in this construction. ❌ Estou fome → ✅ Estou com fome. Com belongs to this expression after estar.
Watch out for Estou quente and Estou frio. They can describe physical temperature or, in context, sexual excitement or emotional coldness. For your felt temperature, use ✅ Estou com calor. / ✅ Estou com frio. For the weather, Está calor hoje. is natural. Excitado also has several senses, including agitated, excited or sexually aroused; ✅ Estou animado. clearly expresses enthusiasm.
The intensifier agrees with the noun. ❌ muito fome → ✅ Estou com muita fome. (I'm very hungry.) Fome is feminine, so muita; frio is masculine, so muito frio.
Being right or sure has more than one expression. ✅ Você tem razão. is a useful default. The alternative estar com a razão also exists. Learn ter certeza too, while remembering that estar certo de can also express certainty.
Faminto is a valid adjective. It means hungry, sometimes with strong emphasis, and is not reserved for novels. ✅ Estou morrendo de fome. is another conversational way to say “I’m starving”.
