B1 (Intermediate)Lesson 6: Advanced Connectors & Discourse
Mesmo does five separate jobs: o mesmo problema (the same problem), eu mesmo fiz (I did it myself), gostei mesmo (I really liked it), mesmo assim (even so) and mesmo que chova (even if it rains). One rule keeps them apart — mesmo agrees when it means "same" or "-self", and freezes when it means "really" or "even".
o mesmo problema (same — agrees) · eu mesmo (-self — agrees) · gostei mesmo (really — frozen) · mesmo assim (even — frozen) · mesmo que + present subjunctive (even if)

Same — adjective, agrees, usually after an article: o mesmo problema (the same problem), as mesmas pessoas (the same people).
-self — emphasis, agrees with the person: Eu mesmo fiz. (I did it myself.) · Ela mesma disse. (She said it herself.)
Really — invariable, sits after whatever it strengthens: Gostei mesmo! (I really liked it!) · É mesmo? (Really?)
Even — invariable, in front of the phrase it concedes: Mesmo assim, eu vou. (Even so, I'm going.) · nem mesmo (not even).
mesmo que + present subjunctive = even if, even though: Mesmo que chova, eu vou. (Even if it rains, I'm going.)
The whole system in one line: it agrees for "same" and "-self", and freezes for "really" and "even".
Mesmo is everywhere in Brazilian speech, and its jobs are not near neighbours: Eu mesmo fiz (I did it myself) and Eu fiz mesmo (I really did do it) differ only by where the word sits. Learners who treat it as one undivided word go wrong in both directions — freezing it where it should agree, as in Ela mesmo fez, or making it agree where it should not, as in Elas gostaram mesmas. Both land badly on a Brazilian ear, and both disappear the moment you can name the job the word is doing.
Before the list, the rule that makes the list easy. Mesmo leads two lives:
Meaning same or -self, it behaves like an adjective, so it agrees: mesmo, mesma, mesmos, mesmas (four forms, like any adjective).
Meaning really or even, it behaves like an adverb, so it never changes: always mesmo (one form, whoever is speaking).
| Job | Agrees? | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| same | yes | a mesma coisa | the same thing |
| -self | yes | nós mesmos | we ourselves |
| really | no | Foi mesmo? | Was it really? |
| Portuguese | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Nós pegamos o mesmo ônibus todo dia. | We take the same bus every day. |
| Ela mesma fez o bolo. | She made the cake herself. |
| Eu gostei mesmo dessa música. | I really liked that song. |
| Mesmo assim, valeu a pena. | Even so, it was worth it. |
| Mesmo que demore, eu espero. | Even if it takes a while, I'll wait. |
| Vamos resolver isso agora mesmo. | Let's sort this out right now. |
| Nem mesmo eu entendi a explicação. | Not even I understood the explanation. |
| Tanto faz, dá no mesmo. | Whatever, it makes no difference. |
Freezing mesmo when it means "-self". ❌ Ela mesmo escreveu → ✅ Ela mesma escreveu. (She wrote it herself.) It agrees with the person doing the emphasising, not with the verb.
Making it agree when it means "really". ❌ Elas gostaram mesmas → ✅ Elas gostaram mesmo. (They really liked it.) In this job the word is frozen, no matter who is speaking.
Indicative after mesmo que. ❌ Mesmo que ele vem → ✅ Mesmo que ele venha, não muda nada. (Even if he comes, it doesn't change anything.) The que pulls the subjunctive every time.
Letting the position slide. Eu mesmo fiz o jantar. (I made dinner myself.) is not Eu fiz mesmo o jantar. (I really did make dinner.) Next to the pronoun it means "-self"; after the verb it means "really".
Using mesmo assim as a conjunction. ❌ Mesmo assim que chova → ✅ Mesmo que chova, eu saio. (Even if it rains, I'm going out.) or ✅ Choveu muito. Mesmo assim, saímos. (It rained a lot. Even so, we went out.)
Reaching for mesmo where a Brazilian says até. For "even" in front of a plain noun, ✅ Até o professor riu. (Even the teacher laughed.) sounds far more natural than mesmo o professor.
